**** I set off from Pittsfield, Massachusetts, in July 2011, zig-zagged across America, and ended up in Aspen, Colorado, in February 2012. Along the way I visited 28 states, three countries, dozens of national parks, hundreds of cities and towns, and countless friends and strangers. I'd lost my job of seven years, my apartment burned down while I was out of town for a weekend, and I ditched a toxic dude. You'd probably hit the road, too. I’m ambivalent about the final return; it’s been eight days, yet I’d like to stay on the road for awhile longer. I’m a little tired—but hardcore party time is over, and I’m getting a second wind.
Speaking of wind, here’s a detail shot that exemplifies the highway blow-over:
Without that physical challenge, cruising’s easy.
